Erstwhile Henequén explores a seldom-seen agave variety in an artisanal mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Produced by Juan Hernández Méndez and Hortensia Hernández Martínez, the limited release uses cultivated Henequén, also known as Agave fourcroydes. Natural fermentation in encino-wood vats and copper-alembic distillation preserve its distinctive savory, mineral-led character.
Tasting notes
Saline and earthy aromas suggest wet clay and fresh rain. A subtle cornmeal-like sweetness softens the palate, followed by a gently spicy, tingling finish reminiscent of Sichuan pepper.
